Effect of Minimalist Footwear on Running Efficiency

چکیده
Humans have been running for millions of years, but the modern running shoe was not invented until the 1970s. However, in the span of just 4 decades, this novel type of footwear with a heavily cushioned, elevated heel; arch support; and a stiffened midsole (“traditional shoe”) has altered running biomechanics and changed the way people run. Investigators contend that because of this shift to traditional running shoes, today, 75% to 80% of shod runners (those wearing shoes) use a rearfoot strike (RFS), which was previously uncommon. Developed to increase the comfort and safety of running, traditional running shoes have been unable to decrease the incidence of running-related injuries. In fact, many suggest a link between the persistently high incidence of injuries and the modern traditional running shoe. Minimalist running shoes seek to address the shortcomings of traditional shoes. They are distinguished by a less cushioned heel and reduced heel-forefoot offset, greater sole flexibility, and lack of arch support and motion control. Spurred in part by Christopher McDougall’s bestselling book, Born to Run, many runners are switching to minimalist shoes hoping to run faster and suffer fewer injuries. 571093 SPHXXX10.1177/1941738115571093Gillinov et alSports Health research-article2015

Effect of training in minimalist footwear on oxygen consumption during walking and running
The present study sought to examine the effect of 5 weeks of training with minimalist footwear on oxygen consumption during walking and running. Thirteen college-aged students (male n = 7, female n = 6, age: 21.7±1.4 years, height: 168.9±8.8 cm, weight: 70.4±15.8 kg, VO2max: 46.6±6.6 ml·kg(-1)·min(-1)) participated in the present investigation. The participants did not have experience with mini...
متن کاملComparison of Minimalist Footwear Strategies for Simulating Barefoot Running: A Randomized Crossover Study
Possible benefits of barefoot running have been widely discussed in recent years. Uncertainty exists about which footwear strategy adequately simulates barefoot running kinematics. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of athletic footwear with different minimalist strategies on running kinematics. Thirty-five distance runners (22 males, 13 females, 27.9 ± 6.2 years, 179.2 ...
متن کاملThe Effect of Training in Minimalist Running Shoes on Running Economy.
The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of minimalist running shoes on oxygen uptake during running before and after a 10-week transition from traditional to minimalist running shoes. Twenty-five recreational runners (no previous experience in minimalist running shoes) participated in submaximal VO2 testing at a self-selected pace while wearing traditional and minimalist running sho...
متن کاملAcute effect of different minimalist shoes on foot strike pattern and kinematics in rearfoot strikers during running.
Despite the growing interest in minimalist shoes, no studies have compared the efficacy of different types of minimalist shoe models in reproducing barefoot running patterns and in eliciting biomechanical changes that make them differ from standard cushioned running shoes. The aim of this study was to investigate the acute effects of different footwear models, marketed as "minimalist" by their ...
متن کاملLower extremity biomechanical relationships with different speeds in traditional, minimalist, and barefoot footwear.
Minimalist running footwear has grown increasingly popular. Prior studies that have compared lower extremity biomechanics in minimalist running to traditional running conditions are largely limited to a single running velocity. This study compares the effects of running at various speeds on foot strike pattern, stride length, knee angles and ankle angles in traditional, barefoot, and minimalist...
